Notes following WEEK 2 

PHONICS - We reviewed the sounds /p/, /n/, /k/ spelled c, /d/ and /s/ spelled s.  If a student reads a white book or a yellow wordline to someone at home 5 times (and gets five signatures indicating that they read) I reward them with a mini-marshmallow.  I return the book so you can return it to their library envelope.

LANGUAGE ARTS - We are learning to identify nouns (the name for a person, place, thing, animal or idea),  You can help by talking about nouns at home.

MATH - Students took their first math test on Friday.  Look for it on Monday.  I use 'corrals' and I read the test too them FYI.

SOCIAL STUDIES - Our unit on Citizenship begins on Monday.

SCIENCE - Students explored our LittleBits sets on Wednesday.  Lights, buzzers and fans oh my!  We have 13 STEAM kits and will be using them to create and invent throughout the year.  

P.E. - P.E. is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Please make sure that students have appropriate shoes for running and P.E. activities.  This week our class focus will be yoga.

TECHNOLOGY -  Students will attend an assembly on Internet Safety on Monday morning.  We will spend some time in the computer lab this week working on Mrs. Simmons Sites and we will learn to use Raz Kids.  I will soon send home the log-in for this, so your student can work on this at home too!

HOMEWORK - We are still in 'light' homework mode.  Real homework will begin after 'Back to School Night'.  Students will complete a book report this week for homework.  The 'hangers' are due on Friday.

MISC. -  Can you help them learn their last name and how to print it?  
           -  Some students need to learn how to tie their shoes.  If they wear tie shoes to  school, can you please double knot them in the morning?
           - Information about signing students up for 100 mile club, and for an after school art class will be coming home on Monday.

FOLDERS - We use 2 folders:
       Homework folder - This is the Glenmeade fish folder.  It only contains homework.  It comes to school on Friday with completed homework, and goes home on Friday with homework for the next week.  Please keep it at home until Friday.
       Back and forth folder - This comes and goes each day.  It contains classwork, tests, and misc. school papers that we get regularly.  Please check and empty this folder EACH day.  Everything stays home unless I send a note asking for something to returned.  

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - Please join us on Thursday at 5:30 pm.  I will be presenting information about what our First Grade is all about.  I hope to see you!
